Homoeopathic treatment of a Child with intractable Epilepsy
11 yr old RS had her first convulsion at Age 6 months. Subsequent delay milestones led to the Diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy with Autistic features. She is non-verbal. She was brought to the Clinic for Recurrent Upper Respiratory Tract infections and Recurrent Generalized Clonic Tonic Seizures and consequent Ill health, which had begun to interfere with her Therapies. At the time she was on a combination of Valproate and Frissium. The dose had been increased repeatedly over the last few years yet the convulsions never came under total control. Her mother was weary of another increase in the dosage of anti-epileptics as she had noticed that it made RS more sleepy, less compliant and more obstinate at home, school and during therapies.
RS walked into the clinic with unsteady gait. Her face was not expressive. A large lump on her right cheek. There was drooling. She kept shaking her legs when sitting in the chair. Mother reported excessive self-stimulatory behaviour in bed. RS had to be constantly busy. Repetitive tasks kept her occupied. She was uninterested in what was going on around her. At the time the frequency of the generalized epileptic seizures was 7- 10 times a week.
Homoeopathic Treatment started on 9.10.01
Follow up 16.01.01 – Generalized epileptic seizures 2 times in 10 days. Twice-mild seizures with a deep breath sound in sleep.
7.02.01 – 5 mild seizures in 21 days. Usually in sleep. (Note- antiepileptics continued in the same dosage as before start of homoeopathic treatment) No frothing at mouth during attack. Time period of seizure reduced from 1 minute to few seconds. Child has stopped mouth Breathing. Nose block less. Dental opinion for lump on right cheek suggests tooth decay. Lump has reduced in size without interference from the dentist.
14/2/01 1 minor convulsion. Gait has improved more confident in walking not reeling from side to side.
Summary of Follow up from 20/2/01 to 10/7/02
RS’s convulsion reduced in intensity and frequency and she has not had any convulsions in the last 6 months. Her readiness to therapy has increased. She does not get cold’s as often as before. The happy added progress has been that RS has begun to express emotions. As compared to the unexpressive face and the most usual behaviour of irritability, RS now shows Happiness, Sadness, Love (Hugs her mother)
At the clinic she greets me with a warm smile and the tall teenager insists on standing next to me with her arm on my shoulder watching with pleasant curiosity as I dispense the medicine. 2002.
Case of a child with Autism and OCD
Most children that fall in the ASD have some obsessions. When these obsessions become over exaggerated to a point where they begin to interfere with regular work, home they must be treated.
Child NM age 5yrs was brought to the clinic on 6/10/2000. Initially a calm happy neat child had begun to be more and more obsessive about order. He would yell and cry if the bedcover had a crease on it (in any of the bedrooms). All footwear had to kept in order, even guests’ . The TV remote had to be in a particular place. Even the utensils in the kitchen had to be placed in order. A little water on the kitchen floor and the child would yell and scream until it was corrected. This compulsives had begun to spill over in school . He would enter class and the minute any of the other children began to move the furniture evenly slightly he would begin to wail and would not stop until the chairs and tables were put back in perfect order. In one on one sessions he would be distracted trying to arrange stray strands of hair on the teachers face . NM was capable of one-word answers after much prompting . Non verbal communication was poor.
First Visit to the Clinic – 6/10/2000
NM walked in with his parents . He immediately began to arrange the files on my desk, the pen, and the phone. A few toy cars, which were lying on the table, he arranged in a row. Then he sat down. At this point he noticed that his parents were comfortably sitting in the armchairs with their arms on the armrest. He could not handle this -he went and physically moved their arms onto their lap. (this he continued through the session)
The Homoeopathic History was taken and the Appropriate Homoeopathic Constitutional Remedy was prescribed. The Patient was called for Follow up after 1 week
Second Visit to Clinic – 13/10/2000
NM walked in smiling and sat down. My table lay in a disarray . He reciprocated my Greeting with a Cheerful ” Hello” and ‘ Fine” His mother sat down comfortably in the armchair . he looked a her and did not attempt to change her position in any way. NM id not attempt to rearrange the files, pens, pen caps books on my table. He gave one-word answers to questions asked, without prompt. Homoeopathy continued
Mother’s Telephonic Follow up 24/11/2000
NM’s Obsessive traits continue to Regress. His concentration has improved. Also when identifimg pictures from a picture book, concentrates and has more sustained Eye contact ( Before he would Glance and Look away). Has begun to watch TV. Sitting continuously engrossed for 10 minutes at a time( Before unaware of TV). NM has begun 2 word phrases ‘Give Banana’ , ‘ Take Bath’ . More aware of the environment. When asked in living room where grandfather sits reading the Newspaper, ” What is Grandfather doing?” ( Without pointing at Grandfather). NM Replies “Reading Paper”. Before he would require physical prompt in the direction of the Grandfather and further prompt to answer which he would do in one word.
Third Visit to the Clinic 2/12/2001

He picked them up and Began to ” Vroom’ the cars down the imaginary road. Appropriate Pretend Play!! After he had finished playing with it He arranged them neatly at the side. Mom says he is more social now. Sits and Listens to for long periods of time. He has begun to laugh appropriately at Physical comedy on TV and at Home. Non Verbal communication has improved.
In the next few months NM progressed to 4 word sentences. He remains a neat child. Happy, Social. His Learning Curve has risen tremendously.
Important Note: During Homoeopathic Treatment . The First 2 weeks the child had no therapies due to Diwali Vacation. After which a constant timetable of Therapies was maintained as Pre-Vacation. As he was less distracted and more amenable to sitting and listening to the therapist were also able to help him at a more optimum level.
Homoeopathic Treatment of young Adults with Asperger’s Syndrome
It is very often seen that children with Asperger’s Syndrome, between the ages of 9- 11 begin to have problems at school at the social and discipline level. This behaviour may also persist at home. What appear to be behavioural problems are basically due the child’s deficit in social skills, lack of under standing of social cues, difficulty in abstract thought at the academic level; a subtle realization of the fact that they are different from other children of their peer group level and inappropriate methods to compensate. Some teenagers with Asperger’s syndrome can develop the clear signs of an anxiety disorder e g panic attacks and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, depression with thoughts of suicide or aggression that may lead to expulsion from school. Constitutional Homoeopathic Treatment at this stage has shown wonderful results. As the child becomes calmer more relaxed and less anxious. He learns to handle life better. As awareness of the environment improves the child is able to understand the situation better and Frustration tolerance is improved. He can handle stress with out the need for ‘Acting -out’ as much as before. As concentration improves academics become easier. Reduced dependency on Routine as an obsession is reduced so that it does not interfere with daily life.
Communication also improves. All this results in Improved self-esteem which is a strong backbone for any individual.
