Happy, Healthy Pregnancy with Homeopathy
Pregnancy is a wonderful and exciting time. From the first bouts of nausea to the little flip-flops in your belly to hearing that first cry of life as the baby enters the world, our bodies and minds experience an array of sensations and emotions. Along with the good things, a few annoying situations may occur – nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, constipation, itchy skin…. Dr Sonal Hattangdi-Haridas explains how homeopathic remedies can help you deal with such problems naturally.
Homeopathic remedies can effectively deal with many common pregnancy related ailments. The remedies are natural and safe for both the mother and the growing foetus
Homeopathy is a very specialized therapy. Remedies are prescribed on the basis of a person’s individual symptoms. For example, each patient with morning sickness will have subtle differences in their symptoms. One might become nauseous and vomit at the sight of food. Another might vomit a few minutes after ingesting the food. Each of these women will require different homoeopathic remedies. When the correct remedy is given in the required potency, the effect is quick and lasting
Digestion-related Problems
Seen in the first trimester, nausea is easily handled with homeopathic remedies. Ipecac is given where nausea is almost constant. Iris V is indicated in sour vomiting accompanied by headache. A gassy stomach with vomiting and flatulence is indicative of Carbo Veg. Excessive vomiting is controlled using Sepia, Cocculus or Veratrum, as the symptoms may indicate.
Heartburn or acidity is common in the first trimester as the connection between the food pipe and the stomach relaxes a bit, due to the higher level of hormones. This allows food and stomach acid to come up into the food pipe, causing a burning sensation and sour burping. In the final trimester, the enlarged uterus occupying much of the abdominal space aggravates this issue. Natrum Phos is a safe homeopathic anti-acid that is taken before meals. Nux vomica also aids digestion and helps push the food along.
The increased progesterone levels also slow down the movement of the intestine, which in turn causes constipation. When constipated, the tendency is to apply more pressure to pass stool. Regular constipation can result in swelling, pain, bleeding and, in extreme cases, prolapse (slipping forward or down) of the rectum.
A balanced high fibre diet is beneficial. Drinking lots of liquids and taking regular walks all aid in healthy digestion and intestinal movement. In homeopathy, Nux vomica is given where small amounts of soft stool are passed with great effort. Bryonia relieves severe constipation with dry hard stool, and also heals cuts in the anal area. Aesculus ointment relieves pain and tenderness in the anal area. Taken in the form of pills, it relieves congestion, controls bleeding and heals fissures in that area. Ratanhia is prescribed to relieve anal itching and soreness.
Skin Irritation
A relatively rare but annoying complaint is an itchy rash that crops us without any apparent reason in the second half of pregnancy. There may be just itching or itching with the formation of hives. Rhus venata is given where there is itching with a red rash on the body. Fagopyrum is given when there is intense itching without a rash.
Aches and Pains
As the pregnancy progresses, the skeletal system begins to adapt to its new posture. The pelvis starts opening up to make room for the growing uterus. The hormones help the process by relaxing the muscles and tendons of the body. Muscle aches and joint pains are common at this time. Body aches are taken care of with a few doses of Arnica or Rhus tox. Muscle cramping, especially that of the calf muscles, are reduced with regular doses of Calc Phos. Severe cramping requires Cupr Met.
Homeopathic remedies Colocynthis, Hypericum and Gnaphalium reduce nerve pains such as sciatic pain. Sciatic pain is an intense pulling pain that radiates down the buttock to the legs, and is experienced by some women in the second half of pregnancy. As most conventional painkillers are not recommended during pregnancy, it’s important to remember that homeopathy offers a safe option.
Breast Tenderness
Soon after conception, the mother’s body begins to prepare itself to provide milk when the baby is born. The breasts begin to enlarge and can become painful. If tenderness is excessive, it can be controlled with small doses of the homeopathic remedy Natrum Muriaticum, Belladonna or Phytolacca. These remedies also help the breast structure adapt well to lactation. For the infant, breastfeeding is paramount to maintaining good immunity and avoiding allergies. It is important to take good care of the breasts from the onset of pregnancy and the first few months of feeding.
Homeopathic remedies like Bryonia and Phytollaca quickly heal any mastitis (inflammation of the mammary gland) that may occur and protect the process of breastfeeding. Lac Can and Riccus communis are wonderful remedies for enhancing the breast milk. Remedies like Borax and Kreosote are useful in treating cracked and infected nipples. As these homeopathic remedies are
non-chemical and safe for the baby, the mother can continue to breastfeed the child during treatment
Emotional Upheaval
Pregnancy can be an emotional roller coaster. The hormonal changes can make a person more sensitive, and one may be easily pushed to tears and anger. Emotional health and happiness is a very important part of the pregnancy. The unborn baby growing within the body experiences all of the emotions that the mother feels. Recent studies have shown that the percentage of ADHD is higher in children whose mothers experienced significant emotional stress during and after the 20th week of pregnancy.
Homeopathic remedies safely calm the emotions. Ignatia can be used to reduce extreme weepiness and sensitivity. Natrum Mur is useful in dealing with emotional stress and sadness that cannot be expressed. Argentum Nit is useful for anxiety about natural childbirth or Cesarean sections.
In certain situations where one or both parents have allergies, constitutional and anti-miasmatic homeopathic treatment of the mother throughout the pregnancy can significantly reduce the percentage of allergies in the child. There is shown to be a noticeable difference in a child’s sensitivity compared to older siblings with whom homeopathy was not used. It is important to remember that pregnant women should avoid self-medication and consult a qualified homeopath for any issues they may have.■
